Local talks coming on ‘unique and unconventional roads to success’

‘We will be able to showcase not only our inspirational speakers on the international stage but also what we as a community in the north are capable of’ – Dr. Nirosha Murugan
After being appointed Tier II Canada Research Chair in Tissue Biophysics earlier this month, Dr. Nirosha Murugan and a group of student scientists have teamed up to present TEDxAlgomaU – Free Your Genius.

The theme is intended to highlight each speaker’s “unique and unconventional roads to success” from people who have ties to northern Ontario.

“The Algoma region has always been the home of originality, innovation and ideas worth spreading,” Dr. Murugan said in a prepared statement. “By infusing the internationally renowned TEDx Platform with our own local stars, we will be able to showcase not only our inspirational speakers on the international stage but also what we as a community in the north are capable of. The student and AU community have come together to create this event that will showcase empowering talks, novel experiences and profound networking opportunities so that even when our guests leave the event, they will go home with a mind full of ideas worth spreading!”

The talk is scheduled for Dec. 7 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Machine Shop.

TEDxAlgomaU student lead and BSc Biology graduate Sawith Abeygunawardena said the students presenting represent a wide range of skill sets.

“It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside Dr. Murugan and our very dedicated team to bring this event to fruition,” shared TEDxAlgomaU student lead and BSc Biology graduate Sawith Abeygunawardena. ”Planning a great event is no easy task, especially when it’s a TEDx event, but our team consists of students with diverse skill sets who are determined to make this event great and represent Algoma U with pride. It’s like we are one well-oiled machine! We are excited to showcase the talent and opportunities we have, right here in Sault Ste Marie, on a global platform like TEDx.”
