The historic centre of the Ukrainian town of Odesa has been declared an endangered Planet Heritage web page by the United Nations cultural agency, Unesco. Russia, which has bombed Odesa serval times throughout its war with Ukraine, has criticised the selection.
On Wednesday, a Unesco panel assembly in Paris, France awarded the status and reported they recognised “the exceptional universal value” of the location.
The earth heritage committee’s 21 member states permitted the declaration, with 6 votes in favour, 1 in opposition to and 14 abstentions.
Odesa’s new status will aid guard the city’s cultural heritage, which has been below danger because Russia invaded Ukraine.
